the memory matching game on the go

  • adapted student concept

objective

BOLD is a 2016 7+ Mattel card game that allows players to analytically match cards across a 4x5 grid using 4 graphic variables. The game incentivizes good memory and exploiting an opponent's mistakes, resulting in exciting scenarios and a highly competitive atmosphere. After being exposed to the game during my internship at Mattel, myself and four other designers believed that aspects of the game could be ameliorated and function better on a digital platform.

Designed in conjunction with Nathasya Effendy, Ryan Stifler, Maya Zimmerman, and Lidia De Oleo.

Oversaw icon design, animation, and sound.

solution

Using the existing brand and gameplay materials as a basis, this conceptual prototype explores how players young and old would experience BOLD on a smartphone instead of a tabletop. The app expands upon the original design with online matchmaking, additional game modes, player customization, and reinterpretations of existing mechanics, unshackling the product from the limited capacity of the printed medium.

major opportunity areas:

  • Remove the inconvenience of physically handling the 81 cards needed to play
  • Implement functionality that expands the scope and variety of the game's mechanics
  • Automate the score keeping process that determines the game’s outcome
